Wednesday Science Challenge

In Room 4 we have started a new unit about buoyancy (floating and sinking). As a warm up to thinking about that we had a buoyancy challenge. In small groups, room 4 had to make a boat out of 40 straws, 4 wooden bbq skewers, 2 small pieces of bubble wrap and some cellotape.

They had 25mins to design and make their boat and it was tested by placing marbles into it until it sunk or tilted over. The top score today was 31 marbles!

We are going to try again at the end of the term to see if our new learning helps us make better boats! Have a look at some of the pictures of the process below!

Tuakana Teina

Last week we spent some time with Room 7 during the school's Tuakana Teina time. These sessions, held once every month, will involve the whole school for afternoons of fun, teamwork, and community.

We buddied up with Room 7 and spent the afternoon with them. We read to them and then went to the playground. We will be buddying up with Room 7 every Thursday from next week onwards!

Persuasive Writing

This week we have started looking at persuasive writing. First we brainstormed situations and reasons when we might need to persuade or convince other people.

NAVA

In writing we have been reviewing our understanding of Nouns, Adjectives, Verbs, and Adverbs. We brainstormed some of these word types for images in class today. Here is our quick one we did together:

Seesaw Learning Journal

This year in Room 4 we are using an online portfolio/journal called Seesaw to document our learning. All students in Room 4 have an account and they will be adding a range of learning to it from all subjects. As parents you can create your own account with the instructions sent home last week. If these instructions have not gotten to you, please let me know at jamesp@stanleyave.school.nz and I will email you through a copy or send another one home.

Milk Art

Today we had very small class due to district athletics. We also had some visitors from Room 10. We had a whole lot of fun by creating art in milk! We used blue top milk, food colouring, and a little bit of dishwashing liquid. The dishwashing liquid causes the bonds in the fat of the milk to break and move around. By adding food colouring, we can see this movement! Have a look at some of the creations in the photos below.

Term 3 Rocket Launch

Here is the video of the rocket launches we did as a class. Not all of them were captured and many have had to be shortened for time. It was a great way to end the term and our learning about rockets!

Planets in Room 4

In Term 3 we made planets for a newly discovered galaxy (Locus IV). Here are some pictures of the process we went through to create them.

Our Favourite Hubble Pictures

Yesterday in Science we started learning about Rockets and Space. We had a look at different rockets that have been used for different purposes. We also discussed the distances between objects in space. Did you know that if the Earth was 10cm in diameter, the moon would sit 3 metres away from it! It certainly doesn't look like it is too far away at night!

Tumblewings!

On Monday in Room 4 we made tumblewings out of phone book paper. They are pretty easy to make but are tricky to fly! We have started practicing with them and hope to have a few people demonstrate how they work on Friday at Assembly.
